Thuja wood is light, soft and aromatic. It is greatly prized for the variations of pattern in the grain and the aroma of its resin. Tetraclinis articulata or Barbary thuja grows in the countryside surrounding the port of Essaouira on the Atlantic coast of Morocco and in the Atlas mountains.
The grained wood used from the base of the tree and root is taken from trees 200-300 years old which are making space for new trees. The forests cover 700,000 hectares of semi arid zone. These UNESCO protected trees are certified, managed and replanted by the Moroccan Government to guarantee protection and re-generation of the Thuja tree population.
