'Oil is the essence of life’
It’s a delicious food oil and also an excellent skin care treatment.
Versatile argan, believed to be one of the most rare oils in the
world, is produced from seeds of the argan tree, which grows only in
the arid semi-desert areas of Morocco.
Ruth Hajioff, founder of Wild Wood Groves, is committed to
developing ethical-trading in argan oil. After studying Moroccan
herbal medicine she has spent the past two years setting up a joint
business venture company in Morocco with Moulay Hassan Daoui called
Bab el Oued d’Argan.
‚We are constructing a production centre about 30km from Agadir.
Trade Partners UK and the British Consulate in Casablanca have been
very useful with general advice on how to get things done in the
country’ says Ruth Hajioff
'We want to create an ethical trade production centre run on a
stakeholder system’ she explains. 'We are planning to link with the
Moroccan Tourist Board to organize tours of the centre as well as
become involved in social development projects, such as education
and onsite child care for employees children.’
Seeds from the Argan tree are harvested and turned into oil by
Berber women using traditional methods. The tree has been around for
about 25 million years and is an endangered species with UNESCO
protection.

Update
Argain Oil Production Centre near Completion
For the past two years Ruth Hajioff, founder of Wild Wood Groves,
makers of argan food oil and skincare products, has been setting up
a joint business venture company in Morocco with Moulay Hassan Daoui.
"Bab el Oued d’Argan“ is currently constructing an argan oil
production centre about 30km from Agadir.
The centre, which is due to be completed by the end of July will
allow Berber women to make Argan oil and earn at least the minimum
wage, rather than half or less of it. In addition, bay paying the
workers a decent salary their lives will be improved and it is hoped
that they will recognise the value of the trees and protect them
(there are currently 860,000 hectacres, but this is decreasing by
20-60,000 hectacres per year).
The plan is that the centre will be open to tourists wishing to see
how Argan oil is produced. Ms Hajioff also hopes that the other
areas owned by the company will become a school for the women, a
cafe and a health centre. She comments, "There is a 90% illiteracy
rate among the country women which is why we want to organise
educational programmes. We hope to complete at the end of this month
or next month. If we can raise additional funding above our personal
investment we will be able to employ the 20 women we have lined up
(mainly widowed or divorced) as well as employ teachers for them.“
"We are planning to link with the Moroccan Tourist Board to organise
tours of the centre as well as becoming involved in social
development projects, such as education and onsite child care for
employees’ children.“

Nutrition Knowledge
Argan Oil
Traditionally eaten for breakfast in Morocco, with freshly baked
bread, this is currently being hailed as an exciting alternative to
truffle oil, as well as a very healing EFA-rich oil. Cultivated from
a nut-like fruit, it’s rich in omgea 6 and antioxidants, and
contains almost twice as much vitamin E as olive oil. Unlike any
other oil, it also contains rare plant sterols, which give it
anti-inflammatory properties that can help eczema, scars,
stretchmarks, acne and psoriasis. It can be used as a beauty
treatment – the Berber women in Morocco have used it for centuries
to counteract the ravages of ageing and harsh weather, and it can
restore shine to dull, lifeless hair and help condition brittle
nails.
Get the Goodness This oil is ideal for drizzling on salads and its
rich, nutty flavour adds depth and taste to food. You can also buy
it as a skin serum and massage onto the skin or scalp overnight for
deep nourishment.

If you're relying on piccalilli to spice up your life, leftovers and
barbecues, then you're missing out on the nation's new craze.

You may not have heard of it yet, but Argan Oil is going to be the
next big thing as far as beauty products are concerned. The product
of the Argan tree fruit from Morocco, Argan Oil has both
anti-inflammatory properties and is richer in vitamin E and
antioxidants than olive oil. Now, Ruth Hajioff of Wild Wood Groves
is offering a range of Argan Skin Care Beauty Serums. Use as a
facial treatment or night oil, apply to extra dry hair, or even
smear on troubled skin as Argan Oil has been shown to help acne as
well as eczema and psoriasis. (If your pregnant, it can help prevent
stretch marks.) Ruth offers four individual blends of the Serum:
Rose (balances the hormones); Jasmine (a sensual blend); Mimosa (to
lift the spirits) and Lavender (soothes inflammation and reduces
scaring). All are available mail order from Ruth who sources the oil
herself, from her website.

Ethical Shopping
HH features editor Lisa Howells loves Wild Wood Groves Argan Oil: I
discovered Fair Trade Argan Oil, which is extracted from almonds
that the tree bears about a year ago. As well as being rich in
essential fatty acids, it has a lovely nutty taste so I use it over
salads and pasta to get my daily quota. It’s also rich in vitamin E
and antioxidants so I use the skin serum overnight to nourish my
skin. As it’s fairly traded local communities benefit and I would
recommend it to anyone.

Healthy heart action plan
You may think you need to avoid fat if you want a healthy heart, but
the key is eating a diet low in saturated fats - which can lead to
blocked arteries - but rich in essential fatty acids (EFAs). Vitamin
E protects the heart but its found in fatty foods and as many people
avoid fat, they may be missing out', says HH healing foods adviser
Ian Marber. ...Argan oil, traditionally used in Morocco to help with
heart disease and high cholesterol, is rich in EFAs and vitamin E,
and has a delicious nutty flavour.

Ethical Shopping... buying for a better world
In the spotlight: Wild Wood Groves
Ruth Hajioff's company produces Moroccan Argan oil and skincare
products containing it. 'The Argan tree now only grows in one small
area of Morocco and, having enjoyed its nutritious properties in
food and skincare, I wanted to help preserve it and help the Berber
women, who have little chance of employment. They make the oil by
crushing organically-grown Argan seeds by hand. It's a highly
nourishing natural skin food, rich in antioxidant vitamin E, and can
help soothe dry skin and reduce scarring from acne.' We love
Cosmetic Oil.
